Forensic Molecular Biology

In addition to case work, the Department of Forensic Molecular Biology is continuously involved in research projects aimed at optimizing methodologies. The focus is on evidence collection and DNA extraction. Our projects are regularly realised in collaboration with the forensic division of the Bernese police forces.

The range of research work undertaken at our department also involves the collection and evaluation of population data for the purpose of probability assessments concerning crime scene traces and kinship analysis.

The rapid development of sequencing methods is opening up new possibilities for research and routine work in the field of forensic genetics. Some of the work currently being done in this area includes a study about the social acceptability of new methods used in forensic genetics.
