Forensic Psychiatric Service

In terms of forensic medicine, the research carried out is service-oriented and case-related. Specialist areas of research include forensic imaging, firearms, time of death estimation and entomology. The research groups involved in forensic imaging and firearms research are headed by Professor Christian Jackowski and PD Dr. Christian Schyma – two experts with an international reputation. An SNSF project concerned with the use of firearms at close range is currently under way at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Bern. In addition to the main areas of research, selections of case histories are also published on a regular basis.

The research department of the Forensic Psychiatric Service investigates a broad range of topics pertinent to the clinical practice of forensic psychiatry and psychology, including fundamental research regarding mental health issues in prison populations.

The department’s research focus encompasses inter alia:

  • Prevalence of mental disorder in incarcerated men and women in Swiss penal institutions
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of specific, structured group offender treatment programs
  • Validation of specific risk assessment tools in German-speaking detainees
  • Progress and trajectories of men and women who receive treatment and / or supervision at the outpatient department of the Forensic Psychiatric Service
